Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Hammock Island was purchased by Bill and Carol Durr in 1972. By 1976 the all sailboat marina was ready for slipholders.
What is your primary product or service?
Hammock Island's only service is the rental of sailboat slips.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
With boating experience only on sailboats, the Durrs brought sailboating north from Annapolis. Bill's skill and interest in design gave our business a real boost. His management skills have also been useful.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
We believe that we are the only all sail marina on the Chesapeake Bay. We're fairly sure that we are certainly the prettiest small marina around.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
Hammock Island is the one and only location. There are no plans to expand.
Provide detailed directions to your location
Head east on Route 100 toward Gibson Island. At the merge of 100 and Mountain Road (Route 177), continue east. Pass Angels on the right, the Chesapeake school complex on the left and turn left onto Ventnor Road. Hammock Island is the last driveway on the right.
What type of payments do you accept?
Because of the high cost of credit card transactions, only cash or check payments are accepted.
Which areas do you service?
Our slipholders come from Maryland, northern Virginia and Pennsylvania.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Carol and Bill Durr are owners and operators.
What are your hours of operation?
Our hours fluxuate according to the season. We suggest you call in advance.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
That not only is Hammock Island the prettiest marina around but it is also the fairest in transactions.
